Kolkata cops assaulted, threatened by mob at checkpost; one arrested

Three Kolkata Police officials were injured after they were allegedly assaulted and threatened by a mob at a naka checking (checkpost) in the city on Tuesday night. The police have arrested the main accused in the case.

An officer, a civic volunteer, and a constable were assaulted in the incident.

The incident happened around 11.00 pm when a naka checking was being conducted by a team of Kolkata Police led by Sergeant Koutuk Ghosh. A local, identified as Bubai Hazra, was allegedly drunk and got involved in an altercation with the officers and threatened them during the checking.

Amid the altercation, he called his aides for help, following which a group of around 20-30 people reached the spot. The angry mob assaulted the on-duty officers, including Ghosh. They broke the officers’ motorbikes and threatened to set them on fire.
Sergeant Ghosh, who received injuries to his back and head, was shifted to a nearby hospital along with the other injured officers. The officers were discharged shortly after and a case was filed against the accused at the Topsia Police Station.
The accused was presented before the court on Wednesday, but a verdict is yet to be delivered.
